One of the biggest problems with sciatica is not your actual sciatica, but what is causing it. Why?

If you do not know what causes it then two of the most common exercises for sciatica will harm rather than cure it. Firstly you need to know the main causes of sciatica.

Disc Bulges – a less common cause of sciatica, but one that most of you fear.

Facet Syndrome – facet joints are the small joints at the rear of your spine. If tight these can cause radiations of pain such as sciatica.

Muscle Tightness – along with muscle weakness, this is the most likely cause of your pain, but not one of the true underlying causes of sciatica.

Joint Disruption and Pelvis Imbalance – this is the forgotten cause and the most likely reason sciatica develops. This pattern allows muscles to weaken or tighten, places stress on your discs and if joints tighten too much, allows facet syndrome to develop.

However, most of you believe that discs and facets are the worse causes and hence use techniques targeted towards them. The big problem is this…

With disc injuries the most common exercise to ease the disc pressure is to lie on your stomach and raise your upper body keeping your pelvis on the ground. In other words a “back extension”.

Although this may help ease some pressure off your discs (in factthere are a lot easier and more permanent ways to back pain relief, this exercise will aggravate any facet problem.

If you believe you have facet problems the best exercise is said to be to lie on your back and to bring your knees to your chest and stretch out your lower back, opening up your facet joints. This will however irritate your discs at the same time.

You may have had some x-rays, an MRI, or other tests to determine the cause. All tests are fatally flawed. Why?

A static picture only tells you major damage. It does not tell you well joints move, if muscles are tight or weak, how much imbalance is occurring in your pelvis. Think of these tests like a photograph…

Take a picture of your car and ask your mechanic why your car didn’t start this morning. They will laugh at you and ask to see your car personally.

The same with your spine – you need to see how well it moves to see what is wrong – a picture does not paint a thousand words – as the song went.

I will tell you now, and I have said it before, sciatica is caused by complex issues.

Sciatica is never caused by only ONE factor!

It is a complex of tight and weak muscles, spinal disruption (including facet problems) and pelvis imbalance. Sure sometimes your discs are involved. If you have had a significant fall or injury then they may be the original cause.

Most of your sciatica of those reading this, came on after a minor lift, fall or came on for no apparent reason

In these situations your sciatica has been developing over time and is a result of the 4 main factors – tight muscles, weak muscles, joint disruption and pelvic imbalance.

Doing 2 common exercises will not cure you of your sciatica and at times may aggravate it. You need to use techniques that are safe, highly effective, easy to do and quick to get results…
