It still amazes me how many so called “back pain experts” still miss the most common cause of upper back pain. The reason I call it the “forgotten cause” is that although it is the most common cause, it is seldom ever mentioned.
Did you know that your spine does NOT work in a segmental fashion? What I mean is that each area of your spine does not work alone. You may have been told over the years, that your upper back pain causes are located in your upper back.
This is not strictly true. Your spine works as an entire system. Think of when you try to bend over to pick up an object. Does only your lower back move?
No, to touch the ground, even if you bend poorly, you use your entire spinal system and even your legs.
The same with walking, do you walk only with your legs, or do your arms move at the same time?
Try walking only using your legs, keep your arms still and see how unusual it feels. Your body works as entire system all the time, no matter what activity you do.
The forgotten cause of upper back pain is therefore obvious.
Your upper back pain causes include your lower back. Even if you have no lower back pain at all, it can still be creating your upper back pain. The joints and muscles in your upper back are smaller than those in your lower areas. They can tire quicker and pain can be even more discomforting, even without experiencing lower back pain or discomfort.
If you are experiencing upper back pain, then you still need to assess your lower back. The causes of upper back pain can come from areas remote to your actual pain.
This is why no matter where your back pain comes from, you must assess your structural balance areas. Your lower back is like a foundation to a house, you need to make sure this area is balanced and working well. If not it will create back pain in your entire spine potentially.
The cause of upper back pain can be local, it can also be elsewhere. This is why we give you the free eBook on finding the cause to your upper back pain, and we show you how to find the imbalances in your lower back and pelvis. If these areas are balanced and strong, your upper back pain causes will be less.
