I know, how can sciatica or back pain be cured by using salt water? It sounds ridiculous, but I am going to teach you something you probably didn’t realize. Then you will understand how “salt – water” is actually a very easy and highly effective cure in both sciatica and back pain relief.
The first thing you need to understand is two things…
1. Your Adrenal Glands
Your Adrenal glands are a gland that sits on top of your Kidney. One of their main functions is to produce anti-inflammatory responses for injuries and aches and pains. They are also there to create support for the joints and muscles in your body.
You are aware that your Adrenals produce Adrenalin, so you can run fast in times of stress. However Adrenalin is produced in small quantities the entire time. This is used to help your physically deal with life, you can move easily, have energy and your physical body can function well.
If these glands become depleted for whatever reason, your physical health will suffer. You will have more aches and pains, you will be physically weaker and hence less support around your joints. Your adrenals also relate directly to your calf muscles (which are the main postural muscle in your body) and the Sartorius muscle (which helps with hip and knee movement, and also helps stabilize your pelvis).
Your adrenals glands actually need salt for them to function well. Have less salt and they will tire and create back pain and sciatica. There are also Acupressure points that stimulate the Adrenals to help them function optimally, which we explain nicely in the X-Pain Method.
2. Muscles need energy to work
Muscles work to help you move, they also support your joints. The smaller muscles around your joints can become tired. If so then you lose support around your joints, then back pain and sciatica can occur.
Your muscles are actually governed by fluid levels and salt. This is why you can get cramps in muscles if your salt levels are too low. Your muscles will also tire if your fluid levels are too low.
The first area of your body that dehydrates is your brain. This is why a glass of water can actually wake you up. Your brain will not totally dehydrate, but certain functions will decrease, mainly related to concentration and the neurological supply to your physical body.
Your nervous system will then fire irregularly and hence muscle stimulus will change. The second area is your muscles; this is so your body can give fluids to the important organs such as your heart, lungs, liver etc.
The Salt Water Cure
You now will hopefully understand two things – your Adrenals are essential for good physical support and strength. Secondly your nerves and muscles need both fluid and salt to work well.
The salt water cure is easy…
You need to drink more water and have more salt. Salt was thought of as the big evil in health, bad for your heart. True… in excessive amounts.
For your adrenals to work well, you need to have approximately a ¼ teaspoon of salt for every liter of water you drink.
You also need to be drinking at least 2 liters of water a day for your muscles, nerves and adrenals to work well.
Fail to do either of these and the following will happen…
Muscles and your adrenals will tire. You will notice lowered energy levels and then some minor aches and pain in your body. They may move around a bit but eventually you notice some back stiffness.
Especially in your lower back where muscles are working harder. Due to the calf muscles tiring, you will get postural changes and may develop upper back irritations if you sit too long. A few cramps at night may develop as well.
As your muscles continually tire your pelvis will lose support, sciatica may develop and suddenly you think you need to see your doctor. You spend a lot of money on medication and various therapies only to find your back pain and sciatica keep returning and eventually you are scheduled for surgery. Why?
Your discs have degenerated to the level, which means surgery is the only option. Yes I forgot to mention your spinal discs are a fluid like gel. They also require water to keep them hydrated and functioning well.
All because you forgot to drink water and have enough salt. I know this may sound dramatic and over the top, but water and salt are very important for your physical health and wellbeing, as well as for back pain relief.
There is a simple salt water cure … drink 2 liters of water a day and eat ½ teaspoon of salt. If you are smaller in size, for example most women, then reduce the water level slightly and the salt as well.
(Note: 2 liters is good for the average male who weights around 100kg, adjust up or down depending on your weight)

16|Mar|2009 1Thank you for this, I haven’t eaten salt for years as I was told it was bad for me. In hindsight I reckon they meant to cut down my salt intake not cut it out. I will try this and see if it helps my backache. Any help with back pain relief is good with me.

16|Mar|2009 2Dr Teague says: You are right, many people were told to “stop eating salt” as it was bad for their heart issues. However it is excessive salt that is part cause of heart disease. You still need salt in your back pain relief efforts - not just for your discs, but hydration and other factors.
Thanks for your comments.

07|Apr|2010 3Thank you for verifying what I already discovered by listening to my body. I had severe sciatica, tried everythig to get rid of it. I kept craving salt. Finally, I gave in and made homemade chicken soup with a little extra salt (I usually avoid any salt because of hypertension). I was astounded to find my sciatica gone in about half an hour.
Since I am a celiac, I know I also have weak adrenals–a result of all those years of eating wrong until I discovered the gluten problem. Your article makes sense. I will spread the word. It was amazing!

07|Jun|2010 4I’ve been suffering from fatigue, weight loss, low adrenals, muscle cramps etc I am also permanently thirsty, as in wake up and my limbs feel numb as I ahve so little fluid. Can this be resolved by drinking?

07|Jun|2010 5Hi Alys
Drinking alone may not help completely, you may need to check your acidity levels, stimulate your adrenals and check to make sure other systems are working well. Water is an easy way to start as it will help. Head over to our main site at The Back Pain Advisor to find out other ways to help.
Good luck.

03|Aug|2010 6I agree 100%. Now the people in Asia have develop a salt without the contaminants. This salt does not raises the blood preSure and it helps detoxify the body and is a huge antioxidant. You can Google Bamboo Salt. Bushier monks recommended this salt and to mix it with water. You can also Google Taoist Inmortity Ritual. Hope this helps.
