I get asked a lot “is there something I can do to ease my lower back pain right now?”

For most people, apart from taking medication, this is a real dilemma. However there are a few things you can do at work to ease your back pain until you can actually deal with the underlying causes.

You must know by now that the causes of lower back pain, sciatica and in fact any back pain complaint is - tight and weak muscles, joint disruption and pelvic imbalance. A lower back pain cure must address all these factors, if you want complete and total relief

But back to what you can do now…

If you are standing in your job, either at a counter or table, then a simple technique you can do to ease your back pain is to place one foot on a raised object. It could be a phone book, a manual from work, a block of wood etc. You only need to raise your foot by a couple of inches.

Place one foot on the ground and the other on the block. Stand like that for 20-30 minutes and then swap your legs over so the other foot is on the block and the other on the ground. You can repeat this all day to stop back pain occurring.

Standing like this will remove all the pressure off your lower back and ease your lower back pain. What this actually does is change your posture, when you get back pain from standing too long, this will help perfectly.

This is good for those standing, but is there a similar technique for sitting?

Actually with the modern chairs there is. You will notice that if you raise the back of your desk up, then your posture changes. The problem with computers is that raising the back of your desk by a few inches makes everything slid off the front.

What you can do is change your seat – the modern seats can be inclined back and forward, so incline your chair forward so the front of the seat is lower than the back. This forces you to sit more upright and takes pressure off your spine.

Then every hour get and a go for a walk. Only for a few minutes, but if you walk (which is still the best way to ease sitting postures) then you relax your posture and ease any muscle tension that is building.

There are many techniques you can try to ease your back pain while you work. However as I stated earlier in this article, you still need to address the factors causing your back pain. Otherwise these techniques will fail to work eventually.
